I setup a still camera in the catwalk of Rexall Place on Sunday during the rodeo and had it automatically take a photo every 15-seconds for 80-hours.

The Result? A time lapse video that shows the rodeo cleanup and hockey rink setup for the Edmonton Oil Kings. See the Time Lapse Video.

http://video.canada.com/VideoContent.aspx?34365&vc=1&popup=1

To make this video I mounted an old Canon 1D camera with a Zenitar 16mm fisheye lens in the catwalk. I triggered the camera with a Pocketwizard MultiMax which is normally used for flashes or remote cameras but has an interesting intervolometer feature.

I set the Pocketwizard to trigger the camera every 15-seconds. Even with the JPEG size set to small, I still had to run back to Rexall Place every 11-hours to swap memory cards as a 2GB CF card would only hold about 2,500 photos.

The trick to making time lapse videos this way is to set your camera in manual mode and meter for whatever your brightest exposure will be. (i.e. when all the lights are on) If the ambient light gets darker, your image will simply get darker too.

In the end I had over 15,000 images to deal with. I wrote a Photoshop action to batch resize all the images to 400px wide (the size of the video), then imported them all into Final Cut Pro. I set the default image length to be 1-frame.

Each frame represents 15-seconds of real time so when the video plays at 30-frames-per-second you are watching time pass at 450-times normal speed.

To keep the video around 5-minutes I had to cut out some boring parts like when the ice was freezing or the lights were out.

The video really makes you appreciate the hard working staff at Rexall Place for making the place a clean and enjoyable place to watch hockey.

Farmers from all over the community came to a field near Bonnyville to help combine 400 acres of barley for a family in grief.

Five daughters aged 15 to 22 were left without parents after a tragic airplane crash took their Mother, Father and Grandmother.

Eight combines and eight trucks worked together to harvest the crop in mere hours. With the help of friends and family the girls are now left to care for over 4000 cattle and 6000 acres of land.

I rushed to the scene joking that it was just going to be a lame picture of a hole in the ground but it turned out to be a great story and a huge hole!

As my super awesome illustration above shows, I have accepted the summer internship with the Edmonton Journal. Basically I will be doing the same thing I did with the Edmonton Sun last year... only now with their competitor :)

I learned and experienced more than I ever could have imagined at the Sun.  I thank my old boss Tom so much for the opportunities he has given me and thank him for the positive encouragement for me to move on.

I am glad to stay in Edmonton and keep shooting in one of Canada's busiest cities. I don't want to slow down!

I have been doing a photo story on an alcoholic named Mike. He is suffering from several ailments that keep him from being able to work, including degenerative arthritis in his back.  Mike doesn't like taking pain killers so instead he goes out every morning and picks bottles and cans. He averages about $10/day which is enough to buy a 6-pack. Above is an average day for him, picking, going to the bottle depot, and then buying 6-12 beer.

Mike has an amazing and uplifting story. I have been working on this as an audio slideshow. You'll see the finished project someday ;)
